Last month’s Notes From the Chocolatier was all about making the most of the last few weeks of summer break with my boys. This time is so important for strengthening the bonds between parent and child as well as discovering who our children are. Spending time with my children is also a creative outlet that allows me to open up my imagination and explore ideas for new, interesting chocolate confections. After all, the essence of Delysia Chocolatier is about making even the simplest moments in life more memorable.
As I get everything ready for the start of a new school year, it’s a reminder of why we parents work so hard. It’s not just about providing for our kids or being able to get them the latest fad toys. It’s about giving them a better future, expanding their opportunities and setting a good example for them to live by throughout their lives.
Teachers provide our kids with an essential curriculum in math, reading and history, but parents are the providers of life lessons. We fill in all of the spaces between different subjects with real world experiences that profoundly shape our children’s education.
I’m proud of the fact that I built Delysia Chocolatier from the ground up without any outside funding. I have put in hundreds of hours of work every year, learned many new skills along the way and sacrificed to make it all possible. Being an entrepreneur is scary and uncertain at times, but it is extremely rewarding. My boys get to see the business operation first-hand, and I hope that it instills in them the value of hard work and pursuing your passions.
As they make their way higher and higher up the education ladder, my boys, like all children, will begin to discover what ignites their interest. They will build on the foundation that leads them to their future careers. They may be in elementary school now, but sooner than expected I know I will be sending them off to college. Hopefully the time they spend with me at the Delysia Culinary Center will teach them lessons that they’ll carry throughout life.
