Notes From the Chocolatier: Enjoying the Splendor of Summer

 

After a busy start to the summer season, traveling around the country to showcase Delysia Chocolatier at premier food and wine festivals, July has been blissfully low key. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to share the festival experience with my two boys, but there’s nothing like being in the comfort of your own familiar surroundings.

Enjoying the Summer Like a Kid With My Kids

Running your own business means you never have day off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the splendor of summer with the people you care about most. This July I’ve made spending more time with my boys a primary focus. During the school year things can get so hectic between studying, soccer practice and play dates that we lose sight of why we work so hard. Summer is a time to take a step back and let life move a little slower.

Think back to those summer breaks when you were a kid. If you’re like me, summer was when your family spent more time together and made memories that would be recalled years later during holiday dinners and reunions. It was a time when our imaginations ran wild building forts, getting lost in books and making up games no one had ever played before. It was a time when simple things like walking barefoot on the cool grass, watching clouds pass and diving into a pool could bring utter happiness.

These memories of summer are what inspired me to create the Childhood Truffle Collection. It’s a reminder of how magical and joyous the season is for kids of all ages. Capturing the essence of emotions and experiences like these is exactly what I strive to achieve with every chocolate that’s created in the Delysia kitchen.

The downtime this July has been a blessing that’s given me the opportunity to recharge and regroup for the busy fall season that will be here before we know it. As soon as the new school year starts we’ll be back to class projects, extra curricular activities, conferences, special events and working long days to get ready for the holidays.

Soon the days will become shorter and the warmth of summer with wane, but right now I’m enjoying the company of my children as I dream up new confections that capture our moments together.

Nicole Patel

Nicole Patel is the proprietor of and chocolatier for Delysia Chocolatier. In 2006 while pregnant with her first son, Nicole made a batch of chocolate truffles as holiday gifts. To the delight of friends and family, she continued to create chocolates as a way to relieve stress from her corporate engineering job. In 2008, a chance trip to Becker Vineyards led to Nicole being the first in Texas to make truffles using local wines. Within five years, what started as a hobby turned Delysia into one of the Top Ten Chocolatiers in the Americas, as selected by the International Chocolate Salon.
