Celebrating National Peanut Butter Lovers Day

Crunchy, smooth, creamy – anyway it’s blended peanut butter is undeniably delicious. It’s one of the few foods that can be found in 90% of American homes. So it comes as no surprise that National Peanut Butter Lovers Day is celebrated by millions across the country.

The average American enjoys three pounds of peanut butter each year, but how well do you know the popular paste you’ve consumed since childhood? It turns out peanut butter is just as fascinating as it is tasty.

5 Reasons to Love Peanut Butter Beyond the Taste

Thick, gooey peanut butter drives $800 million in sales a year and helps keep thousands of people employed. That alone is pretty impressive. But the amazing qualities of peanut butter don’t stop there.

Every Part of the Peanut Gets Used – Each jar of peanut butter is 90% peanuts, but what about all the shells? They don’t go to waste either. Peanut shells are used to create a variety of products including paper, wallboard, kitty litter and power plant fuel.

It’s Vegan and Gluten-Free – If you follow a vegan or gluten-free diet most peanut butters are perfectly fine to eat.

Peanuts Are Healthy Legumes – Don’t let the name fool you. Peanuts are actually legumes, which means the paste is a nutrient-dense food that’s packed with protein, vitamins and minerals.

It May Help Prevent Breast Disease – Research from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis indicates that girls who eat peanut butter in their youth have a lower risk of benign breast disease when they’re older.

Peanut Butter is an American Invention – Peanuts originated in South America, but peanut butter is purely American. It was first introduced at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair.
