Breakfast in bed is a quintessential Mother’s Day gift. Waking up to a warm meal served bedside is a little luxury that shows how much you appreciate everything she does for the family. But pulling off the perfect breakfast in bed for mom requires careful timing, thoughtful presentation and, of course, a delicious meal.

Creating the Perfect Breakfast in Bed Experience

Step 1 – Timing Things Just Right

The perfect breakfast in bed has an element of surprise. This calls for impeccable timing and coordination, especially if you have kids that want to help serve the breakfast. First and foremost, you’ll need to know mom’s sleep schedule. Is she planning to sleep in? Do you have anything else planned for the day? When does she typically wake up on a Sunday? Give yourself at least an hour to get things ready before she plans to wake.

The most difficult aspect of the operation is getting up without waking her up. If you have a smart watch, set it to vibrate at a specific time instead of setting an alarm. You can also have an older child set an alarm then come in and wake you up when it goes off. Prepare to have an excuse ready in case things don’t go according to plan.

Step 2 – Finding the Right Setting

The tray is by far the most important item needed to pull off a Mother’s Day breakfast in bed. Breakfast trays can be stylish and functional if you choose the right one. Select a tray that compliments the beautiful meal you will be creating.

When shopping for a breakfast tray, look for:

  • Upscale Materials – Shy away from cheap-looking plastics and metals. Wood trays are timeless and project the luxurious feeling you’d get from a 5-star hotel. Clear acrylic breakfast trays are also extremely chic.
  • Height – The tray legs need to be tall enough that the tray won’t get bumped around while still being short enough to comfortably eat from a reclined position. Look for trays that are at least 8” tall.
  • Sturdy Construction – Legs that fold are convenient for storage, but before purchasing make sure there is a way to lock them in place.

Step 3 – Creating a Delicious Menu

Like timing, putting together a special breakfast can be tricky, especially if mom does the grocery shopping. Create a menu that includes mom’s everyday favorites with a few special extras. That way it’s easy to pull off a multi-course meal without mom discovering the plan.

Culinary Delights

You don’t have to be a master chef to create an upscale meal. The key is to use top-quality ingredients and keep things simple. Easy, delicious breakfast in bed favorites include:

  • Fresh fruit salad
  • Bacon (turkey if mom is trying to be healthy)
  • Toasted English muffin with a side of butter, honey or jam
  • Eggs (however she prefers). Try your hand at a baked egg. They’re easy and delicious.
  • Smoked salmon
  • Croissant
  • Yogurt parfait

Follow the main course with a decadent dessert. We suggest our Mother’s Day Truffle Collection. It’s a handcrafted set of rich chocolates that feature the delicate flavors of lavender and rose tea for an unexpectedly flavorful finish in every bite.

Hundreds of years ago, European royals use to indulge in delicious hot chocolates with their morning meals. You can treat mom like a queen this Mother’s Day with our soothing Lavender Chocolate Mix. The mellow minty flavor is a delicious way to relax even if you’ve just woken up.

For a little added fun, pop open a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion with mimosas. Any champagne will do, but the orange juice is what really matters. Select a fresh, hand-squeezed juice that’s low in pulp for the perfect mimosa.

Step 4 – Polishing the Presentation

Anyone who has worked in the service industry can tell you that presentation is everything. Even the simplest of meals can be dressed up with fancy dinnerware and flatware. But that’s just the essentials. You can add fabulous accessories like a real cloth napkin in a fun print, cute egg cups if you’re serving soft or hard boiled eggs, and small decanters for cream, honey, and the like.

Pick out a theme for your meal and let that influence the presentation. Then finish it off with a small floral arrangement or single long-stemmed flower. We guarantee mom will love it!
